Introduction: Antidepressants are a standard treatment option for depression, but they have positive as well as negative consequences for individuals. This thesis aims to present the impact of antidepressants on sexual function.
Methods: PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCO), Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar were searched for literature based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search flow was illustrated using a PRISMA diagram. We analysed and synthesised the literature and ranked it in a hierarchy of evidence.
Results: Out of 319 identified records, we included eight articles in the final analysis. We found that some antidepressants have a substantial effect on sexuality in both men and women. Studies indicated that antidepressants in women lead to reduced sexual desire, difficulties in arousal, achieving orgasm, lubrication, and other issues. In men, symptoms include delayed ejaculation, erectile difficulties, and, in some cases, painful or retrograde ejaculation. Recognizing these issues is crucial, and therapy should be tailored to the individual.
Discussion and Conclusion: Treatment with antidepressants, where selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are in the foreground, can cause significant side effects in the field of sexuality. |
