Povzetek

This thesis provides a detailed analytical and performance study for pianists who seek musical, technical and interpretational answers during the process of learning ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’. This study is an example of a learning approach designated to inspire and stimulate young musicians to be compelling and confident in their interpretation of any musical piece. This study is theoretical and is organized in two chapters. In the first part, the life and works of Mussorgsky are presented. The way his musical style had impact on the musical world at that time. In the second chapter, one of his best works is represented: “Pictures at an Exhibition”. Who inspired him, what the meaning of this work is, what the best approach as a pianist is to play this monumental work are all shown in this master thesis. The aim of this study is to use extra-musical content as an aid to the process of technical and interpretive mastery. This essay offers an analysis and discussion of sound imagery via pianistic texture, the composer’s main means of expression, along with the technical challenges encountered throughout the suite. From a pedagogical perspective, this study aims to serve as an example for achieving musical and technical mastery through associative thinking and textural interpretation.
