Sekundarni naslov: Influence of different types of hay nets on the duration of hay consumption in individually stabled horses
Sekundarni povzetek: The aim of this study was to determine which types of hay nets available in our country are most commonly used and what influence does the use of different types of hay nets have on the duration of hay consumption in adult horses. Type of hay nets with which we checked their influence on the duration of hay consumption was chosen so that we surveyed the horse owners who use them. From 162 horse owners we received 181 responses. Hay nets with 3 × 3 cm holes were used by 39, 8 % of users, 28, 7 % had hay nets with 10 × 10 cm holes and 31, 5 % of users had hay nets with 5 × 5 cm holes. Based on these results, we conducted a three-week experiment to determine how long horses consume hay when it is scattered on the ground, in a hay net with 3 × 3 cm holes or in a hay net with 10 × 10 cm holes. The experiment involved 6 horses that received hay in one of the three ways for 7 days. The horses were recorded 24 hours a day and the analysis of the recordings determined the total daily time of hay intake. The horses spent an average of 593 ± 22 minutes per day consuming hay from a hay net with 3 × 3 cm holes, which was significantly longer than from the ground (392 ± 22 minutes) and from a hay net with 10 × 10 cm holes (323 ± 22 minutes). No significant difference was found between hay nets with 10 × 10 cm holes and consumption from the ground. Hay nets with 3 × 3 cm holes are therefore recommended for horses that eat hay too quickly and require a longer consumption time.
