Sekundarni povzetek:	The purpose of the dissertation was to analyze the fantasy novel Northern Lights with the fifth graders. The dissertation is divided into two parts: the theoretical and the didactic part. The theoretical part opens with the description, definition and the characteristics of the fantasy novel. The theory is mainly based on the theoretical model of the fantasy novel developed by the Swedish analyst Maria Nikolajeva. The centre of the analysis is the His Dark Materials trilogy by the renowned British author Philip Pullman with the special focus on the first book in the series, Northern Lights. Furthermore, the life and works of Philip Pullman are described along with the basic information about the His Dark Materials trilogy. The natural phenomenon of the northern lights is also presented since this was the inspiration for the title of the first book. The book itself is discussed in terms of plot and character portrayal. The dissertation contains the analysis of the fantastical elements in the His Dark Materials trilogy in accordance with the theory of Maria Nikolajeva and the analyses of two Slovenian authors, Jakob J. Kenda and Liljana Burcar, are also mentioned. The last section of the theoretical part is devoted to the discussion of the The Golden Compass film in terms of the basic and trivia information as well as the response of the Church. Lastly, the comparison is made between the film Golden Compass and the book Northern Lights, which the film was based on. The didactic part focuses on the analysis of Northern Lights with the fifth grade pupils at osnovna šola Orehek Kranj. The analysis was conducted during seven lessons. This part of the dissertation consists of the definition of the research problem, the research hypothesis, methods, sampling, the process of data collection, instrument, data processing as well as the results and the interpretation. The hypotheses were confirmed with the help of interviews and questionnaires. In conclusion, it has been established that the pupils are very creative and they enjoy escaping to the fantasy world.
