This diploma work deals with safety barriers on the roads. The first part of the work describes the traffic safety in Slovenia and in the EU and it also concentrates on the causes of accidents and the measures for their prevention, which have been carried out by means of preventive actions as well as by the monitoring activities of the police. These actions are more or less of a repressive nature and are mostly related to finding and punishing of the traffic rules offenders. Further, the EU standard for safety barriers EN 1317 is presented together with its requirements for their design, production, placement and testing. The second part of the work explains the varieties of safety barriers with regard to a material used and to the form of a spacer, by means of which the rigidity of a safety barrier can be considerably decreased. The description of safety barriers that are frequently used and conform to EN 1317 is given. These include steel-, concrete- and wooden safety barriers, barriers for the protection of motorcyclists, moving safety barriers and road suspenders. The third part of the work focuses on the conditions for the placement of safety barriers (where and when they should be used) and on the means of placement of different kinds of safety barriers, regarding their length, the length of the terminal element, their distance from the verge, curb and obstacles, the placement on middle central reservation width and on its passage. The concluding part summarizes major errors that are encountered by the placement of safety barriers, regardless of the inspection, and presents the aftermaths of their incorrect designs and placements. |
