Applicability of lean production concept in construction |

The concept of lean production is a contemporary approach to production planning and organization that emerged in the fifties. Lean production requires from the user to adapt to a completely new way of thinking. The thesis presents the main principles of lean production and compares them to other new production planning and organization methods, such as theory of constraints, just in time and total quality management. Construction industry tends to implement these methods with a time lag, mostly due to a complex, longlasting production process that consists of several stages (concept, design, construction, commissioning, use and maintenance and de-commissioning) with a large number of project participants. The implementation of lean production concepts is therefore currently an extremely vivid area of research and application. Therefore, the core part of the thesis first describes principles, flow and phasis of lean construction, followed by a chapter where several successful cases of lean construction worldwide are presented. LastPlanner tool was used in all cases presented. Two cases of successful Slovenian companies from the building industry are presented. The degree of lean construction principles' application was determined for both companies by using the interview method. The analysis of both cases shows that both companies are modern enterprises that follow the world trends both in product development as well as in production and assembly organization and planning. They both aim at eliminating material and time waste, which is one of the principles of lean construction. Based on the literature survey and cases under investigation, it can be concluded that the lean production principles can be successfully implemented in construction industry. This conclusion is supported by successful cases both worldwide as well as in Slovenia. If application of lean construction principles is carried out properly, a rational and consequently more cost-efficient construction process can be achieved. |
