Developing social skills by adults with Asperger's syndrome |

In my term paper I have discussed Asperger's syndrome and its characteristics in life of an adult. This topic is rather unexplored in our area; lately, however, it attracts more and more attention.
My aim has been to present life of an adult with Asperger's syndrome and describe significant differences between deficits arising in childhood, and those arising later, when such an adult integrates into society. Closer attention has been paid to recognising and expressing emotions and, moreover, to learning social skills, which can be of help to an adult with Asperger's syndrome, when communicating with others.
The purpose of my research has been to discover the obstacles which adults with this syndrome more often encounter. The goal of my term paper has been to recognise the characteristics of deficits arising in adulthood of a person with Asperger's syndrome, to acquaint myself with successful strategies and characteristics of work with this kind of person, and, finally, to find out what his or her self-esteem and socialisation look like.
A practical part presents the case study of a student at Ljubljana University, who was three years ago diagnosed as a person with Asperger's syndrome. I have carried out social skills training, which included ten individual meetings with the student. Five of them were dedicated to learning social skills with the use of social stories, another five, nevertheless, to learning how to express emotions with facial expression using a mirror. The last meeting was held in a group and was devoted to evaluating achievements and effectiveness of the learning methods used.
I have discovered that social stories contribute to better understanding of social skills and this way to their more frequent use in communication with others. Furthermore, the learning method of expressing emotions with the use of a mirror enables a person with Asperger's syndrome to remember a specific facial expression, typical of a certain emotion, more easily; to more often use the appropriate one when expressing his or her own emotions in communication with others; and, consequently, to more successfully recognise other people's feelings. |

Povzetek (ePrints): |
V svojem diplomskem delu sem obravnavala Aspergerjev sindrom in njegove značilnosti v življenju odrasle osebe.
