The aim of this undergraduate thesis was to assess the current situation releted to the use of information technology in teaching and learning, and establish which technologies the teachers actually use and the students made use of. We were also interested into which technologies would students like to use as their support for learning.
Initially, our attention was focused on the description of technologies such as computer, tablet computer, smartphone, personal response systems, interactive whiteboards, and their use in schools. Research was conducted to verify which technologies were used by teachers in their work, for what purpose and how frequently. The teachers were also asked their opinion of the usefulness of these technologies. Likewise it was researched which technologies were used by pupils as support for learning and how frequently.
Research results have shown that, beside computers, our teachers rarely use any of the other technologies. The majority of interviewed teachers use computer in all phases of teaching. More than a half of the interviewees use interactive whiteboards when explaining new learning contents and consolidating the knowledge. The remaining information technologies considered in this research are used by a very small proportion of the teachers interviewed. The majority of the teachers interviewed believe that computers are useful in the preparation for class work, form teaching work, and as the means of motivation. According to the interviewees, interactive whiteboard, tablet computer and smartphone are useful primarily as the means of motivation.
Students most frequently use computers as support for learning, and slightly more than half of them replied that they used smartphones as well as tablet computers. The majority of the interviewed pupils believe that the technology makes it easier to learn, and they would also like to more frequently use this technology at school. |
