Sekundarni naslov: The role of small and medium-sized cities in the implementation of polycentric development in Slovenia
Sekundarni povzetek: This paper deals with small and medium-sized towns in Slovenia in order to identify and define their role in the urban system, that is why an overview of domestic and international findings in this field is presented first. In order not to be completely theoretical, a methodology for defining small, medium-sized and large cities in Slovenia has been devised. Slovenia has no suitable methodology, there is only the statutory town status which is not enough to make the aforementioned division. The methodology includes criteria for describing the town and its surroundings. The emphasis is not only on town size but also on other characteristics of Slovenian settlement. Those criteria are based on certain European guidelines and are on the other hand adapted to the Slovenian settlement model. The methodology is a key for further definining the role of Slovenian towns in polycentric urban development, as defined in the Slovenian Spatial Development Strategy.
