Safety aspects of pre-school children climbing in natural crags |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
The thesis deals with safety aspects of pre-school children exercising rock-climbing activities in natural crags. The latter tend to get visited more and more frequently by young families with the aforementioned group of children. The goals of this study were to evaluate how well parents or foster parents exercise safety measures when climbing with children in natural crags, to evaluate whether the climbing frequency affects the maximal grade of the routes climbed by children, and to find out whether the age of children affects the number of routes climbed during the crag visit. The data regarding climbing safety were collected by means of a check-list and an informal questionnaire between October 2012 and June 2013. The sample consisted of 30 parties of pre-school children and their parents or foster parents, climbing in natural crags. The collected attributive data regarding the equipment used during climbing and its proper use were weighted from the safety point of view, based on expert opinion of climbing instructors. The data were analyzed using the SPSS statistics software package. The frequencies and descriptive statistics of individual variables as well as their cross correlations were monitored. The hypotheses under consideration were tested against a 95 % confidence level (p ≤ 0.05). Based on the analyzed data, we have concluded that children on average use 30 % better equipment compared to the equipment used by the adults belaying children. Furthermore, 90 % of the adults are formally educated regarding climbing activities. This leads to the conclusion that parents or foster parents have mastered proper belaying techniques and know well how to properly use the climbing equipment. Consequently they take good safety precautions when climbing with pre-school children in natural crags. The statistical data analysis did not show strong correlation between the frequency of the crag visits and the maximal grade climbed by children. However, we can confirm that older children tend to climb more routes during a crag visit, compared to their younger colleagues. |
