Unemployment influences the mental and physical health of an individual immensely, which can lead to various mental and physical illnesses that have a long-term effect on the efficiency of an individual. Unemployment does not only influence individuals, but also the environment in which they live in.
In our graduate paper we studied the employment of people with mental disorders. We introduced different training and employment forms for the disabled, which include people with mental disorders. We were mainly interested in employment possibilities for people with mental disorders with regard to their abilities. We studied legal possibilities and tried to determine if there are differences in the employment of people with special needs in Slovenia and abroad.
Not only the legal foundation is important, but also the values and standpoints of the society, which can support or with its prejudice hinder people with mental disorders to get and keep an employment.
We find that people with mental disorders still have less employment possibilities, even though the laws protect them from unemployment and give them employment possibilities with regard to their abilities. We determined that employers still see such people as less able to carry out work and so sadly the laws that should benefit people with mental disorders are broken. |
