Design of timber lookout tower |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
In 2011, the Hunting Association Krvavec is planning to make an investment into building the highest timber tower in Slovenia. It will be placed on the top of a hill Frajka, southwest of Krvavec mountain. A special feature of the tower is its unique design, with shear square rigid core, consisting of timber cross-laminated (XL) panels. Rigid core provides horizontal stability for the whole structure. Peripheral part of the structure, consisting of columns and beams, are connected to the core by using horizontal cross beams. They partly support the staircase and further stabilize the core.
In this diploma work I first present a brief history of building timber towers. I describe selected towers from Europe and Slovenia. I further carry out detailed static and dynamic analysis of the above mentioned tower by using finite element code SAP2000. The results of detailed analysis are compared with the results of simplified analyses. Computed internal forces are finally used to design the main load-bearing timber elements and joints, with main focus given to the connections between XL panels. |
