The set of topics on plants is a part of the syllabus for Natural Science in the 6th grade of elementary school. It is especially interesting for pupils from the aspect of learning about the internal structure of plant organs with microscopy. The diploma thesis focuses on the internal structure of the stalk. After reviewing the literature, I came to the conclusion that teaching about the stalk structure has changed positively, since before the reform of the syllabus in 2011 the internal structure of the stalk was not a part of the teaching goals. The new syllabus introduced new goals and new text books that devote some attention to the internal structure of the stalk. However, in order to make the microscope an important instrument for teachers and not to always use the same plant species when teaching this topic, I decided to search for a few other plants that might be suitable for teaching the internal structure of the stalk. I was interested in species that are generally spread across Slovenia and that bloom during the school year. The plans were picked in Ljubljana, in the vicinity of the Biotechnical Faculty at which I made the microscopic preparations of stalks, examined them under the microscope and photographed them. After examining and analysing the photos I confirmed my hypothesis: not all stalks are suitable for initial teaching at elementary schools. Stalks suitable for teaching must have a compact stalk so that the teachers do not have difficulties when preparing a large number of thin sections and must contain all basic structures about which the pupils will be taught. Of 29 examined stalks, 10 were suitable. |
