Morphometric analysis has been done on liver samples of eight specimens of the white subspecies of the Proteus (Proteus anguinus anguinus). With a net test system, we have evaluated volumetric density of hephatocytes, pigment cells, blood cells, and other structures in the liver of control specimens and compared them with starved specimens (shorter and longer period of food deprivation) and with specimens from the winter season. Using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn’s Comparative tests, we found statistically significant increases in the volumetric density of pigment cells in the liver of starved specimens with the highest levels in the specimens that were starved for 18 months. The volumetric density is also increased in the liver of specimens observed in the winter time, but it is lower than in the liver of the specimens that were starved for 18 months and comparable to the specimens that were starved from one to four months. No statistically significant differences were found in the proportion of blood cells and other structures in the livers of starved or winter time specimens. |
