Sekundarni naslov: Picture books and animal characters in illustrations for younger children
Sekundarni povzetek: The present thesis defines the fundamentals of children’s literature, introduces the concept of a picture book, skill level based typology and explores the balance of text and illustrations in a picture book. Various subgroups of picture books are described here and we are also presented with some ideas on how to create picture books. A whole chapter is dedicated to illustration; it covers the definition and meaning of visual literacy, while also laying out the relationship between visual and textual messages in picture books. This thesis categorizes illustrations by age groups they were intended for and emphasizes the importance of Slovenian Biennial of Illustration (SBI) for youth and children. It also highlights the significance of picture book illustration for children and the impact of quality picture book selection. This work provides ideas and recommendations for picture book analysis in schools, but also adds a chapter on artistic language, which discusses a range of visual elements in picture books, composition of pages, letter size, use of colors and materials. The concept of visual motif is explained, while we focus on traditional animal characters in literature as well. Some animal species are described including their symbolic meaning and a short overview of their depiction in visual arts through time. The final part of this paper contains an interview with perhaps one of the most popular Slovenian illustrators of this time – Lila Prap known for her informative and instructive picture books. Her work is abundant with animal life and their world – she equally depicts animals we are traditionally comfortable with, but also those that are burdened by stereotypes and might be unexpected to find in a picture book – she claims she never picks any favorites. She uses soft chalk pastels on a dark surface because she prefers experimenting with characters over material. Lila Prap managed to develop a unique artistic expression loved by children all over the world.
