diplomsko delo
Povzetek
Diplomsko delo Smrt ženske v kratkih zgodbah Edgarja Allana Poeja obravnava motiv smrti ženske v kratkih zgodbah ameriškega pesnika, pisatelja in esejista Edgarja Allana Poeja. Ta dela so Berenice, Morella, Ligeia, Konec Usherjeve hiše, Ovalni portret in Eleonora.

The diploma paper The Death of a Women in Edgar Allan Poe's Short Stories discusses the motive of the death of a women in short stories written by the American poet, writer and essayist. In his works, where the women are destined to die, he includes only a limited set of motives: motives of illness, being buried alive, dead people returning to life, insanity and obsession. He uses them as symbols for the dark parts of the human psychology and reveals the most horrible human inclinations. The paper presents Poe's short stories which include the motive of the death of a woman and analyses six of Poe's short stories where the death of a woman is the main or one of the main motives. The works included in the analysis are Berenice, Morella, Ligeia, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Oval Portrait and Eleonora. Edgar Allan Poe is known as an artist who wrote his works intentionally and after consideration. He was also convinced that a work of art should strive to achieve impact. In his works, love and death are almost inseparable. Moreover, in the essay The Philosophy of Composition he wrote that the death of a woman is the most poetic theme in the world. The paper studies whether Poe's concept of poetics is represented in his short stories and how the motive of the death of a woman influences his intention to create impact, which contributes to the aesthetic function of his works. Poe's life was also torn between life and death. He had to suffer the loss of his beloved mother, his foster mother and his wife Virginia who became the inspiration for some women in his works. The diploma paper presents some of the important women from his life and searches for parallels between them and the female characters in the examined short stories. |
