Sekundarni povzetek: In this master thesis we examined whether there is a correlation between the frequency of media use and the frequency of experiencing stress among young people in Slovenia. First, we defined the basic concepts of mass media, their functions and effects and the use of the mass media among young people in modern society. Then, we explained the concept of stress and we focused especially on the effects of media use. Furthermore, we presented the theoretical foundations of research on the self-reported stress levels stress in relation to media use. We analysed data from Slovenian Youth 2010 study. In our research four hypotheses were tested by method of linear regression analysis. First, we analysed the relationship between the frequency of internet use and the frequency of self-reported stress, while controlling for socio-demographic variables; the relationship has proved to be positive and statistically significant. We also analysed the relationship between the frequency of use of entertainment and political/informative media contents and self-reported stress levels. The correlation between the frequency of political media use and self-reported stress was higher than the correlation between entertainment media use and the stress level; which resulted in a rejection of our second hypothesis. In the context of the fourth hypothesis we examined the relationship between the frequency of phone use and stress; we found a positive and statistically significant correlation. Finally, we analysed whether there is a higher correlation between playing video/computer games and stress or watching television and stress. We found that watching TV with entertainment contents was not significantly associated with stress, but there were associations between stress and watching TV programmes with political content and between stress and playing games. The results of our study raise concerns regarding young people and their health since they are frequent users of the media in modern societies.
