Sekundarni naslov: Knowledge of selected genetic topics among high school pupils
Sekundarni povzetek: Genetics is considered by many to be one of the most difficult fields of biology. Furthermore, researches show that high school students have an insufficient knowledge of biology in regard to cell structure and sexual reproduction of living organisms. Thus, our goal was to assess high school students' basic knowledge of genetics and to test their knowledge of cells that represents the basis for understanding genetics. We were interested in the quantity and the quality of their knowledge and in potential common misconceptions. The research was conducted on a group of 108 students from two high schools. 53.7% of the participants were first-year students and 46.3% were second-year students while 66.7% were female students and 33.3% were male students. Data was collected using a questionnaire with 35 questions. The questions tested the students’ knowledge of cells, cell processes and microscopes, reproduction and genetics, as well as their attitude towards biology and the research. The quality of students’ answers was more successfully for the questions on cells and cell processes and the questions on reproduction and genetics. The results showed that second-year students have a slightly better knowledge than first-year students, but the progress is not significant. There were only a few differences between the knowledge of female and male students and they do not point to one of the genders having better knowledge than the other. We have also established that the high school students who participated in our research do not have a very positive attitude towards biology and they generally do not want to work in a field connected to biology. However, they believe that biological knowledge will be useful in everyday life.
