magistrsko delo

Podrobneje sem opisala notranje in zunanje dejavnike. Podatke sem tabelarično in grafično prikazala z uporabo računalniških programov Word in Excel.

Sekundarni povzetek: An important fact leading me to the choice for the topic of my master's thesis is the rising poverty rate. It is worth considering just how important maintaining a healthy diet is to people living under the poverty line. Eating quality foods is crucial to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and prosperity. A balanced diet positively affects the quality of life, whereas an unbalanced one leads to increased susceptibility to disease. In my thesis, I focused on the nutrition of the recipients of extraordinary financial social assistance, i.e. the minimum amount considered high enough by the state to survive, though many — especially those of us in the field of social work — know, it is anything but high enough. I was interested in the overall dietary patterns of these recipients, the factors, influencing their food purchases, how healthy their diet is and how that is connected to the ownership of a garden. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I initially described the factors influencing food purchasing behaviour of consumers (financial social security assistance recipients included) and then both the internal and external factors. Afterwards, I focused on the diet — the importance of a healthy diet, what constitutes it and the Slovenian eating habits. At its end, I comprehensively detailed the work of the Centre for Social Work, social transfers and financial social assistance. In the second part of the thesis, I included an empirical study, based on a survey involving 106 financial social support recipients, out of which 99 questionnaires were valid. They form the survey sample. I was testing 4 hypotheses: can any average dietary patterns be deduced when observing financial social assistance recipients (who are therefore people with very limited financial means); does price play the biggest role when purchasing food; does the majority of financial social assistance recipients eat unhealthy food and whether individuals with a garden eat more healthy than those without one. I displayed the data in graphs and charts using Word and Excel. The results are more or less in line with expectations and point to the existence of certain dietary patterns among financial social assistance recipients. Interesting to note is that only a few eat more than three meals per day. As expected, the analysis has also shown that price is the most important factor when purchasing food, whereas buying healthy and domestic food rank among the least important ones. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, financial social assistance recipients eat healthy despite all assumptions, owing to the fact that a high percentage of recipients have a garden and therefore grow their own vegetables. This is where I realised the connection between having a garden and a healthy diet. Those who have one indeed eat better than those who do not.
