diplomsko delo

Female leadership in different cultures |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
It is a general belief that a good leader can only be male. The field of female management is still considered as a kind of taboo which is slowly being broken. Females are asserting themselves in this field and by doing this they are changing the stereotypical belief that women cannot be successful managers. While doing this they are faced with numerous obstacles which prevent them from progressing hierarchically as fast as their male colleagues. One of the most important obstacles is the glass ceiling which is the consequence of the stereotypical belief of where women belong and what their purpose is. Women who overcome all the obstacles on the way to their manager career have to face the fact that they will be paid less as their male colleagues despite having the same qualifications. The number of women occupying executive positions is nevertheless increasing. They are gaining confidence based on their abilities, education, empathy, ability to collaborate and their readiness to help the weak- qualities that are gaining importance in today's world.
In business operations and in managing companies we come across different cultures which have different values, norms and customs. It is important for managers to educate themselves in this area since the lack of knowledge about a certain culture can unknowingly cause a lot of damage to an organization. It is important to thoroughly research the cultural background of the countries we are doing business with since cultural differences can cause invisible barriers for successful business operations and managing. Knowledge of culture is nowadays considered as increasingly important competitive advantage.
Female managers are often faced with different barriers which can be different in certain cultures but are generally very similar. In Slovenia as well as in the Scandinavian countries they are stereotypically looked upon as not being able to match their male colleagues. However, this mentality is slowly changing since women are following the footprints of their male colleagues and proving that they can be equal. It has to be emphasized that the role of women as managers in Scandinavian countries is more prominent than the one of women managers in Slovenia which can be proved by e.g. by the larger share of women in the managing structures of companies. |
