Svojci v domačem in institucionalnem okolju se srečujejo s situacijo, ko njihov starostnik ni zmožen sam odločati o svojih potrebah, zato morajo to storiti namesto njega.

Sekundarni naslov: PROBLEMS AND DILEMMAS OF RELATIVES OF ELDERLY PEOPLE REGARDING THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN CARE AT HOME OR IN THE INSTITUTION
Sekundarni povzetek: Theoretical basis: Human old age and ageing bring many changes on physical and psychological level as well as many diseases. When a senior is unable of taking care of himself his relatives are first to help him and take care of him, but there also exists a variety of organized aid in home environment as well as in the institutional care. Purpose: We wanted to discover and present the distresses and dilemmas of relatives who participate in elderly care in home or institutional environment and find out if these relatives are conscious of the responsibility in taking decisions for the elderly instead of them and if the professional services help is needed in resolving their distresses and dilemmas. Research methods: Reserach part of the thesis is based on the quantum method of empirical research. Two anonymus survey questionnaires composed of 24 questions were used as the research instruments. We distributed 25 questionnaires among relatives in private households and 26 questionnaires among relatives whose elderly are in institutional care. The answers were processed in computer program Microsoft Excel. Results: The results of the research has shown that relatives in home environment feel overcharged by offering their help to their senior family member. Even though they know the variety of organized aid that is at their disposal they are not fully benefiting from them. Relatives that place their elderly family member into an institutional care are plagued by feelings of guilt which is not as great as the feelings of disburdenment, relief and helplessness they feel at the same time. After moving into a nursing home most relatives participate in taking care of their elderly family within the instututional environment and also cooperate with staff. Relatives in both types of elderly care environments encounter a situation in which their elderly family member is not able to decide about his needs anymore, therefore they have to do it instead of him. They are fully aware of the responsibility for making these decisions, thus in more than half of cases they do it with difficulty and often find themselves in dilemma. Discussion and conclusion: The research has shown that relatives in taking care for their elderly family member in both, home care as well as in the institutional care experience great distresses and dilemmas and aren't receiving sufficient help for themselves that they need just as well as their elderly does and sometimes even more.
