Effects of different soil microbial communities on the uptake of mercury in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Idrija is a small city known for its 500 year history of mercury (Hg) mining, one of the most toxic (an)organic pollutants. A quarter of the processed mercury was lost in the surrounding countryside. Therefore the plants and microbes growing in such environment were forced to adapt by developing of different tolerance mechanisms. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different soil microbial communities on the uptake of mercury and growth and development of sunflower. The microbes were isolated from soil collected in the field near Biotechnical Faculty (MIBF) and in the garden in Idrija (MII). Commercial microbial inoculum EM (Micronatura) (MIEM) was also utilized. Dry weight of roots and shoots and the concentrations of photosynthetic pigments were determined. The mercury levels were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Our results show that Hg is mainly concentrated in sunflower roots. We have confirmed the hypothesis that MII negatively affects Hg uptake and rejected the hypothesis that MII increases the sunflower growth in the presence of mercury when compared to the other treatments. The biomass of roots and shoots was the biggest in the sunflowers inoculated with MIEM in the substrate with Hg. |
