Abstract

Secondary title: Translating titles of childrenʹs and young adultsʹ literature
Secondary abstract: Children's and young adults' literatures are special parts of literature, since they are written for children and young adults who are different readers than adults. Translation of literary works intended for this audience should therefore be adjusted to the readers' needs. The translator must bear in mind the child's mentality and reading comprehension. Precisely in these two types of literature, the title of a book has a significant meaning as children and young adults often choose to read a certain book on the basis of a title. Therefore, the appellative function of the title is very important, since the author of the literary work and all those involved in the contribution process want to reach as many readers as possible. In this thesis we focused on the functions of the titles and translation strategies used when translating titles. In the theoretical part of the study we presented a review of scientific literature and described functions of book titles, translation strategies and certain translation-related concepts that are important for our analysis. In the empirical part we analyzed 200 titles of children's and young adults' books and divided them according to the function and strategy. The results of the study showed which functions and translation strategies are most commonly used in the translation of titles of literary works from English to Slovenian language.
