Abstract

Secondary title: Malnutrition of children with special needs
Secondary abstract: Theoretical standpoint: In the diploma we presented the causes and consequences of inadequate food intake in children with special needs. The purpose of the final work was to investigate and describe the most common eating problems of children with special needs. It was also intended to establish a link between allergies to any food and malnutrition. Research methodology: A review of Slovene and foreign literature was used in the theoretical part of the descriptive method of work. In the study we used a quantitative methodology. As a research instrument, we used a survey questionnaire for the parents of children with special needs. The results of the survey were processed using the Office Excel 2010 and SPSS 23 software programs, and displayed descriptively and in the tables. Research results: We have found that 25,7 % children with special needs have dietary problems. The latter are limited by insufficient food intake into the body and, consequently, loss of muscle mass and fat in certain parts of the body. 22,9 % children with sensitivity to allergens also have a lower BMI calculation and a higher risk of being underweight. Conclusion: Problems of children with special needs remain the same over the years. Some parents know how to deal with this kind of lifestyle better, some worse. Adjusting the intake of food in children is crucial. However, there is a need for more frequent dietary examinations in developmental clinics and, consequently, better education of parents in identifying the causes of malnutrition.
