magistrsko delo
Abstract

ǂThe ǂimpact of auditory lateralization on the performance in simultaneous interpreting of numbers |
Secondary abstract: |
Simultaneous interpreting is a verbal translation of the spoken text from a source language into the target language. In addition to other factors, performance in simultaneous interpreting depends on auditory lateralization, i. e. the choice of ear used for verbal input. The main goal of this thesis is to determine whether interpretation will be more successful if the interpreter listens to the speech with only one ear, especially with the right ear, which is directly connected to the left brain hemisphere. The thesis comprises the theoretical part and an empirical analysis. The latter is based on an experiment in simultaneous interpreting. As part of the experiment, the students listened to the chosen speech in three different ways: first, by wearing headphones on both ears, then on the right ear and, finally, only on the left ear. The findings have shown that interpreting is more successful if the interpreter listens to the speech only with one ear, but not necessarily with the right ear. The study also showed that interpretation was more successful when interpreted numbers were shown on slides and that female students were more successful at interpreting numbers. On the other hand, the experiment did not confirm a correlation between the dominant arm and the preferred ear for listening nor did it confirm that senior students necessarily outperform their junior colleagues. Finally, contrary to previous research, the study did not prove that interpreting performance was better when interpreters listened with the right ear. |
