Abstract

Secondary title: Narcissism and selfie-posting behaviour on Instagram
Secondary abstract: The widespread popularity of selfie-posting on social media has sparked a growing interest of scientific and empirical study of the factors that motivate individuals for this type of behavior. Many studies link the selfie-posting behaviors to the rise of narcissism, as they assume that posting such photos reflects self-promotional behavior. The present work thus examines a relatively new and only partially researched phenomenon of selfie-posting on Instagram, which, as one of the most popular social networks, is especially intended for selective self-presentation with photos. The online survey was conducted on a sample of 107 Instagram users, which empirically examined the relationships between narcissism and selfie-posting and motives for posting selfies on Instagram. The results of regression analysis showed a positive influence of narcissism on the frequency of selfie-posting, the motive of seeking attention and confirmation from others and there was also a positive influence of narcissism on posting one's own selfies. The findings thus confirming and also disseminating the existing connections between narcissism and self-promotional behavior on the social network sites, while also confirming that narcissism as a personality trait may not be related to all types of selfies, but only to the specific categories of selfie-posting on Instagram.
