Abstract

Namen magistrskega dela je preveriti duševno zdravje zdravnikov (stres, depresivnost, anksioznost, zloraba psihoaktivnih snovi, blagostanje, samomorilno vedenje) v povezavi s socialno oporo in osamljenostjo.

Secondary title: Medical doctors' mental health
Secondary abstract: Medical doctors face a variety of challenges and demands at work, so they can experience many mental health problems. The purpose of this master's thesis is to examine the mental health of doctors (stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, well-being, suicidal behaviour) in relation to social support and loneliness. Specifically, the thesis investigates the differences between specialist registrar doctors and specialist doctors with regards to components of mental health. It also aims to determine which factors predict the suicidal behaviour of doctors. Furthermore, it investigates whether the perceived control during the COVID-19 pandemic predicts mental health in doctors. The research sample consisted of 287 doctors. It was found that social support for doctors is negatively associated with stress, depression, anxiety, and suicidal behaviour and positively associated with well-being. The results also showed that loneliness in doctors is positively associated with stress, depression, anxiety, and suicidal behaviour and negatively associated with well-being. There are no statistically significant differences in the expression of mental health components between specialist registrar doctors and specialist doctors. It was also determined that depression positively predicts suicidal behaviour, while stress and social support are negative predictors of suicidal behaviour. Findings related to the COVID-19 pandemic show that perceived control during the COVID-19 pandemic is an important predictor of stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal behaviour, and well-being. The qualitative work provides insight into how the COVID-19 pandemic affected mental health and the work of medical doctors, how medical doctors generally deal with stressful events, and how they care for their mental health. It also provides additional information on what doctors consider to be the most important protective factors and risk factors for mental health, and how mental health affects work, family life, and general functioning.
