diplomsko delo visokošolskega študijskega programa Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

Police units training and action in resolving amok situations |

Police officers are exposed to dangerous, stressful and physically demanding situations in the course of their police work, for which they need to be well prepared all the time. According to this, they receive yearly trainings in several areas. They also prepare for crisis situations, which require a good understanding of the practice and theory of dealing with different phenomena. One of these is the AMOK situation, which has come more to the fore in the last three decades. The word AMOK originates from Malaysian and means a frenzied, hopeless and violent act. Throughout history, its meaning has changed slightly and in 1770, Captain James Cook, for the first time, described it as violent behaviour without any apparent cause. It could be said it is an outburst of uncontrolled violence using a weapon.
At the beginning, we focused on the concept of the AMOK situation itself and the psychopathological factors, which influence on the event. It is an active situation where we have, for the most part, one perpetrator who shoots indiscriminately at all who come in his path. The threat usually ends as the perpetrator's suicide, and the perpetrator's motive is usually unknown. The reason for this behaviour may be a revenge, injustice or simply a desire for visibility. There are three main psychological factors that contribute to an attack: narcissistic revenge, dissociative personality disorder and a psychopathological condition of dimming perception of reality.
After that we take some examples of AMOK situations in countries in Europe and in the United States, and then turn to the training of police forces in this area. We looked at the importance of cooperation between police and emergency medical services and also on the action taken by police officers themselves. It is very difficult to prevent an AMOK situation, which is why we place great emphasis on preventive. We also focused on psychological support for the victims of the attack, their relatives and the intervention services.
We have come to the conclusion that an AMOK situation is very unpredictable, so we don’t know when and where it will happen. Despite the Slovenian legislation on the use of weapons, Slovenia is a potential environment where such a situation could occur. |
