Abstract

Secondary title: The history of school punishment with special emphasis on physical punishment
Secondary abstract: As has society as a wide community of people changed through history also relations among people have changed. An individual as a part of society was expected to behave in accordance with set norms, values and behavior patterns. Society's norms and values, which have surely been affected by historical processes, were reflected in school legislation and set educational goals. Throughout history not only educational goals changed, changes were made also in the system of rewarding and punishing pupils (school punishments). Until 1869 school legislation permitted the use of physical punishment, which was, in the belief of pedagogues of the time the only effective disciplining means. As peoples' regard of children was changing also the views of discipline and the manners of achieving it, gradually changed as well. After the First World War administrative punishments were brought into force in schools, the emphasis was put on voluntary discipline. Physical punishment in a contemporary, democratically regulated school is intolerable.
