Abstract

Diplomska naloga obravnava sodobne pristope pri načrtovanju kontejnerskih terminalov, ki so postali ključni elementi v globalni logistični infrastrukturi. Zaradi rastoče svetovne trgovine, tehnološkega razvoja in okoljske ozaveščenosti so tradicionalni modeli načrtovanja postali nezadostni. Avtor zato analizira nove trende, kot so avtomatizacija, digitalizacija in trajnostno načrtovanje, in poudarja njihovo vlogo pri povečanju učinkovitosti in konkurenčnosti terminalov. Na začetku naloga predstavi teoretični okvir kontejnerskih terminalov – njihove funkcije, postavitve in pomen načrtovanja. Tradicionalni pristopi, ki temeljijo na statističnih analizah in inženirskih standardih, so primerjani s sodobnimi metodami, ki uporabljajo simulacije, digitalne dvojčke, umetno inteligenco in napredno analitiko. Ključna prednost sodobnih pristopov je večja prilagodljivost na spremembe ter možnost vključevanja trajnostnih meril že v fazi načrtovanja. Poudarek je namenjen avtomatizaciji in digitalizaciji kot dvema osrednjima stebroma modernih terminalov. Avtomatizacija omogoča neprekinjeno, varno in energetsko učinkovito delovanje prek avtonomnih vozil in avtomatiziranih žerjavov, medtem ko digitalizacija s pomočjo podatkovne infrastrukture in naprednih orodij (kot so digitalni dvojčki) omogoča optimizacijo procesov in okoljsko odgovorno načrtovanje. Za empirični del avtor analizira dva primera dobrih praks, terminal Yangshan Phase IV na Kitajskem in CTA Hamburg v Nemčiji. Yangshan je zgled popolne avtomatizacije in centraliziranega upravljanja, ki dosega izredno učinkovitost ob minimalni človeški vključenosti. CTA Hamburg pa temelji na postopnem uvajanju avtomatizacije, poudarja trajnostno energijo, digitalizacijo in integracijo z železniško mrežo, kar prispeva k njegovemu vodilnemu statusu v Evropi. V zaključku naloga ugotavlja, da sodobno načrtovanje ni več le tehnična naloga, temveč interdisciplinaren proces, ki vključuje tehnološke, okoljske, organizacijske in družbene dejavnike. Sodobni kontejnerski terminali postajajo inteligentna logistična vozlišča, katerih uspešnost temelji na celostnem in dolgoročno naravnanem pristopu.

Secondary abstract: This thesis explores modern approaches to the planning of container terminals, which have become key components in global logistics infrastructure. Due to the growth of international trade, technological advancement, and environmental awa reness, traditional planning models have become increasingly insufficient. The author analyzes emerging trends such as automation, digitalization, and sustainable planning—and emphasizes their role in improving terminal efficiency and competitiveness. The thesis begins by presenting the theoretical framework of container terminals, including their functions, layouts, and the importance of strategic planning. Traditional approaches, based on statistical analysis and engineering standards, are compared to modern methods that use simulations, digital twins, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics. A key advantage of contemporary approaches is their higher adaptability to change and the ability to integrate sustainability criteria from the early planning phases. The focus is placed on automation and digitalization as the two main pillars of modern terminals. Automation enables continuous, safe, and energy- efficient operation through autonomous vehicles and automated cranes. Meanwhile, digitalization, supported by data infrastructure and advanced tools (such as digital twins), allows for process optimization and environmentally responsible planning. In the empirical part, the author analyzes two case studies, Yangshan Phase IV terminal in China and CTA Hamburg in Germany. Yangshan represents a model of full automation and centralized management, achieving exceptional efficiency with minimal human involvement. CTA Hamburg, on the other hand, is based on a gradual introduction of automation, emphasizing green energy, digitalization, and integration with the rail network, which contributes to its leading status among European ports. The conclusion highlights that modern terminal planning is no longer merely a technical task but an interdisciplinary process involving technological, environmental, organizational, and social factors. Contemporary container terminals are evolving into intelligent logistics hubs, whose success depends on a holistic and forward-looking planning approach. V
