Secondary title: Success of behaviour modification in a child with Asperger's syndrome
Secondary abstract: The topic of this degree dissertation is the success rate of behaviour modification in a child with the autistic spectrum disorder Asperger’s syndrome. I decided to pursue this subject based on my work in a kindergarten, where I became acquainted with a boy with Asperger’s syndrome. The issue I encountered was that I could find no sources where the method of behaviour modification was implemented with persons that have Asperger’s syndrome. For this reason I decided to determine, by using the method of modifying undesired behaviour, whether the method influences behaviour among persons with Asperger’s syndrome or not. I was interested in whether the method would influence the behaviour of the boy I was observing or not. The objective I set myself was to describe and present the method of modifying undesired behaviour in a child with Asperger’s syndrome. I wished to learn whether the method of modifying undesired behaviour influences behaviour in a child with Asperger’s. I observed the boy in a group for four weeks, throughout the time he was at the kindergarten. I then guided him towards desired behaviour for two weeks, specifically using the method of modifying undesired behaviour. I recorded his behaviour in a journal that I updated every day. I kept the journal for four weeks, during which time I recorded all the boy’s undesired behaviour and what caused such behaviour. I was also interested in how intensive the undesired behaviour was and how long it lasted. By means of the modification of undesired behaviour method I sought to find out whether behaviour in a boy with Asperger’s syndrome can be improved, and whether this also leads to desired behaviour. I analysed his behaviour before and after applying the method of behaviour modification. The results before and after application of the method were then compared with each other, and I wrote up the findings and guidelines regarding which approach was recommended for the boy as being evidently successful. I recognised the success of the approach after analysing the applicability of the method of modifying undesired behaviour. At the end of the dissertation I also noted guidelines and suggestions as to how we might help a child with Asperger’s syndrome overcome and eliminate undesired behaviour.
