Secondary title: Required reading in primary schools in the area of Karst
Secondary abstract: Required reading is of great importance for children's intellectual development and broad-mindedness. Through reading, not only do children develop their reading habits, expand their vocabulary and improve their general knowledge, for them it is also a means of getting immersed in the world of imagination and experiencing something beautiful. In addition to children's parents it is teachers who play the key role in encouraging children to read literature. The aim of the thesis was to look into how teachers decide on specific texts to be read as part of required reading. Without other people's encouragement, children may in this era of digital media very well end up neglecting books and choosing computers and other devices instead. The focus of the theoretical part of the thesis was to define reading, the types and typology of reading. Moreover, reading strategies and children's reading development in the primary school were presented. Principles for selecting literary works were described and required reading was also discussed in association with the curriculum, teaching accessories and the collection ob literary texts which encourages reading at home. The focus of the empirical part of the thesis was to present a study whose aim was to establish what teachers in the Karst area of Slovenia are lead by in deciding what texts to include in required reading.

Abstract (ePrints): Domače branje je izrednega pomena za otrokov intelektualni razvoj in širino. Brez spodbude lahko otrok v času digitalnih medijev še kako hitro zanemari knjigo in jo zamenja z računalnikom in drugimi aparati. V teoretičnem delu sem opredelila branje, vrste in tipologijo branja. Predstavila sem bralne strategije in otrokov bralni razvoj v osnovni šoli.
