The diploma thesis consists of two parts, theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part defines a picture book and its role in children’s development. The wordless picture book is described as one of typical literary work where the reader can create the meanings and can be the co-author. The quality picture book and illustration have the significant role in children’s development. The picture book satisfies children’s needs for safety, joint attention, feelings and at the same time it encourages the development of motoric and intellectual abilities. The role of adult readers in introducing reading to young readers has been emphasized.
The empirical part includes the children’s narrative feedbacks on the quality wordless picture book written by Damijan Stepančič Zgodba o sidru. The readers have to create the meanings in relations among illustration, their experiences and values; therefore they can be the co-authors. The results show that making the story depends on children’s environment which has less cognitive and reception elements than adults’. The results also show the children’s imagination, vivid illustrations, character empathy, humour, dramatic elements and using experiences in creating the story. |
