In the thesis the most important properties of triangular, Fibonacci, palindrome and Pascal numbers are presented. These properties are used as a source for mathematical investigation.
The first part of the thesis considers selected topics from number theory which are suitable for mathematical investigation in lower secondary school. Mathematical investigation is primarily intended for the learning of cognitive processes related to problem solving, and is part of the school curriculum. On the other hand triangular, Fibonacci, palindrome and Pascal numbers are not part of the mathematics curriculum in lower secondary schools. Yet, these numbers possess interesting properties that can be discovered by students using simple investigation without making use of advanced mathematical tools. In the course of investigations, students explain their understanding, interpret the problem and propose solutions. They become aware of the practical usefulness and value of learning math and relate the learnt mathematics with other school subjects and everyday experience.
The second part of the thesis consists of materials that teachers can use in the course of mathematical investigations in the lower secondary school in the field of number theory. |
