Abstract

Secondary title: Translating colloquial language in the contemporary translation of "The catcher in the rye"
Secondary abstract: Literary translation is a very difficult process, which involves linguistic characteristics of the source and target language. That is why the translator has to pay attention to specific linguistic characteristics in the literary work he is translating. His goal is to transfer these characteristic into his translation. He gives the reader the possibility to read classics in his native language, which he otherwise could not. Since it is not always possible to transfer certain words or expressions, the translator has to focus on the transfer of the literary tone in his translation to express the authors intentional use of specific characteristics without which the novel would not have the same effect. That is why the translator has to pay attention to particular elements which are easy to overlook if we do not take a deeper look at the linguistic structure and elements. But every translator has a unique take at the text and therefore it is necessary to bear in mind that there are always other solutions to particular translational problems. Not better or worse, but certainly different.
