Abstract

Secondary title: Collocations in legal language
Secondary abstract: The thesis focuses on the contrastive analysis of collocations in legal language. Collocations defined as loosely fixed recurrent combinations of two or more elements represent the majority of natural language. Their main characteristics are language-specificity and translational predictability, therefore they are problematic when encoding. In legal language, collocations are regarded as a language norm in the form of fixed phrases which cannot be modified. Therefore, they pose a translational difficulty also when translating into the native language. Based on a sample of English legal collocations, a contrastive analysis was carried out to produce Slovene equivalents. The collocations were analysed based on their semantic and structural similarity and the usefulness of specific translation tools was also considered. According to the analysis, parallel corpora, such as Evrokorpus and Linguee, are the most useful tool for translating collocations in legal language.
