Abstract

Prevajanje slenga in pogovornih izrazov lahko za prevajalca velikokrat predstavlja izziv. Do potankosti mora poznati jezik in kulturo tako izhodiščnega kot ciljnega jezika. Ciljna publika načeloma ne pozna jezika in kulture izhodiščnega jezika, zato je prevajalčeva naloga, da izlušči pomen in ga ustrezno prenese v ciljni jezik. V magistrskem delu smo najprej opredelili pojme prevajanje, avdiovizualno prevajanje, podnaslavljanje ter pogovorni jezik, sleng, kletve in psovke. V empiričnem delu smo analizirali podnapise filma Gran Torino, pri čemer smo se osredinili na slengovske in pogovorne izraze ter izraze preklinjanja. V pomoč so nam bile metode avtorice Jolante Legaudaite, in sicer metoda ublažitve, stilistične kompenzacije in direktnega prenosa ter izpust. Ugotavljali smo pogostost in ustreznost uporabljenih metod v podnapisih ter za nekatere primere podali ustreznejše predloge.

Secondary title: Translating colloquial English and slang in the subtitles to the movie Gran Torino
Secondary abstract: Translating slang and colloquial English is a challenge for any translator who has to be fluent in both source and target language and to understand the source and the target culture. The target audience is unfamiliar with the source language and the source culture; therefore, it is the translator's task to find the equivalent meaning and to transmit it into the target language. In this thesis, we first defined the following terms: translation, audiovisual translation, subtitling, colloquial language, slang, curse and swear words. In the empirical part, we analyzed the subtitles to the movie Gran Torino, focusing on slang, colloquial English and swear words. We used the translation strategies suggested by Legaudaite, namely softening, stylistic compensation, direct translation and omission. We looked for the frequency and adequacy of the use of the abovementioned strategies in subtitles, and in certain cases provided in our opinion more appropriate suggestions.
