Abstract

Secondary title: THE ROLE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL IN DETECTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
Secondary abstract: This thesis is divided into two parts. The first section presents definitions of child abuse, forms and stages in which abuse takes place. In addition, it describes the signs of sexual abuse, the characteristics of victims and the actions taken by schools against child abuse. The second part presents the survey results, which will help determine the mechanisms schools use for the detection and reporting of child sexual abuse and how many of them are aware of this issue. The survey was conducted on a selected primary school in Ljubljana. It was filled in by pedagogical and non-pedagogical workers at the school. The results showed that a vast majority of the respondents believe that identification of signs of child abuse in their line of work is very important. Moreover, many of them feel that they would be able to recognize the signs of child abuse to some extent. The results also showed that the employees have a positive attitude towards child abuse prevention, but they lack sufficient knowledge. The survey results suggest that the main reason for this lies in the unawareness of the protocols necessary for the identification and prevention of child abuse in primary schools. Note that the respondents cited their fear of identifying child abuse symptoms incorrectly as the biggest factor for not reporting the abuse.
