magistrsko delo

Verbal violence by students towards staff in secondary schools |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Violence against teachers has become a major problem in educational sphere, though scarcely talked about. Research conducted by a project group of the American Psychological Association (APA) focusing on violence against teaching staff showed that as many as 80% of teachers reported having faced with at least one form of victimisation in the workplace; thereof, 94% of teachers were victimised by students. This Master's thesis aims to determine whether teachers in Slovenia are exposed to school violence too, in particular the teaching staff in secondary-level schools (attended by students aged 15-19), and to disclose the effects of such violence on teachers. The results of our survey reveal that the respondents have not frequently faced with verbal violence from their students; in the structure of respondent teachers working either in small, medium-sized or large secondary school centres, there were no statistically significant differences perceived. Teachers with a longer service life tend to agree with the premise to have faced with verbal violence from their students more frequently than their colleagues with a shorter career. According to the results of the survey, the teacher's gender does not correlate with the extent of experiencing verbal violence from students. Significantly, our research reveals a statistically relevant correlation between experiencing verbal violence and negative emotional stance of such teachers. In dealing with this worrying problematic issue that concerns both the involved staff and the society as a whole, it is imperative to act preventively: empower the teaching staff for their professional development in preventivne programmes that would help identify the characteristics of students who might develop aggressive behaviour. Teachers will learn to perceive and identify violent behaviour, and be equipped with an adequate response to violent acts of students. We propose several research projects dedicated to teacher's perception of violence and addressing the violence against them. |
