In the life of some parents, there comes a moment when they notice that their child is different from other children. In parents of children with autism it often happens that they don't know why their child is different or what exactly is what makes them so different. When the diagnosis of autism is made they often have one question: »What now?« In Slovenia, some organizations try very hard to raise public awareness of people with autism spectrum disorders and the options they have. However, because of lack of experts in this area parents are often still left to themselves.
Abroad, many different treatments are available for people with autism spectrum disorders or autism. One of the main treatments is ABA treatment.
In the first part of the thesis I defined autism and presented ABA treatment. Because parents are crucial in the implementation of ABA treatment and the progress of the child progress, I also dedicated a few words to that.
The second part is a description of abilities of a child with autism and severe mental disorder, and a practical demonstration of implementation of ABA treatment with a demonstration of child’s progress.
In cooperation with other professionals and parents I made an initial assessment of the child’s abilities and an individualized program for therapy.
I implemented ABA therapy with a preschool boy with autism and severe mental disorder for seven weeks . After that time, I made a new assesment of the child’s abilities and evaluated his progress.
I came to the conclusion that with the use of ABA treatment the child has shown progress in areas of communication, imitation, and attending skills. There was also a reduction of inappropriate behaviour including temper tantrums. The parents also reported greater responsiveness and compliance of their child.
The purpose of this thesis is not to give instructions and »recipes« of how to do ABA treatment, but to enable a better understanding of basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis – ABA to parents and professionals, and to demonstrate progress of a child with autism and mental disorder by using ABA treatment. |
