Early intervention for a child with autism spectrum disorders |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
The topic of my thesis is the early intervention for a child with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who attends a regular nursery. I chose the topic on the basis of my experience with children with autism in institutions and in school. However, I have not yet had experience with a preschool child who has ASD and attends a regular nursery.
In the thesis I focused on finding strategies which help improve social and communicative skills and develop independence in a preschool child with ASD. The objectives of the empirical part are to determine the child’s strengths, difficulties and special needs and based on these strengths, difficulties and special needs to design and implement training for enhancing skills in communication, social interaction and independence and finally, to evaluate the progress of the child after the implementation of the training. Before the intervention took place I evaluated the child’s functioning with the help of scales, questionnaires and observation. According to the evaluation results, together with the parents and preschool teachers, I set the goals of the intervention and designed a training programme which includes elements of the TEACCH method and interactive activities. The training was held for four months, 3–4 times a week.
I compared the gathered results before and after the training process. In comparison to the initial testing, the child made progress in all three areas: communication, social interaction and independence. After the early intervention implementation, the results of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) show minor deviation from the behaviour of his peers compared to the initial testing.
Based on the obtained results I believe it is necessary to include preschool children in early intervention programmes, regardless of whether they have ASD or other special needs. |

Pred izvajanjem obravnave sem s pomočjo lestvice, vprašalnikov in z opazovanjem ocenila otrokovo funkcioniranje.
