Lie detection and a review of some lie detection techniques |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
A lie is a conscious and voluntary statement made by someone who is intention is to deceit the other person. It is not important whether the attempt is successful or not. Lying by itself is not illegal, and most of us could not go a day without telling at least little white lies. Probably the most common belief in lie detection is that liars averse gaze and that they appear fidgety and nervous, but the mentioned behaviours depend on the person, the situation that he/she is in and the investigator and his behaviour. The thesis focuses on the comparison of selected deception techniques, more specifically, on their effectiveness.
The diploma aims to deepen the knowledge about lies and to find out which deception techniques are suitable for use in the pre-trial procedure and what which cues of deception we can detect with them. The first section of the thesis gives a brief overview of the reasons why we lie to people, what lies we tell, the characteristics of good liars, what our ability to detect lies is and what are the common mistakes in detecting deception. The second section describes selected deception detection techniques and evaluates their effectiveness derived from primary research and sources.
In the course of our research, we confirmed two hypotheses and refuted one by reviewing existing research. By testing the hypotheses, firstly we found that both verbal and non-verbal cues are needed to evaluate statements more successfully; secondly, newer lie techniques have higher performance than older ones. Thirdly, even though people with antisocial personalities have the advantage in lying, this does not mean that they are better at detecting it. |
