Sekundarni naslov: Influence of the male teacher on the reading motivation of the elementary school student
Sekundarni povzetek: Reading is with us our whole life. For most of us the first reading experience is when parents are reading us different stories and fairy tales. But after a while some people find reading a nuisance, it becomes useless to them and they stop reading, because they lose the motivation for it. These students don’t see the purpose of reading and don’t understand the importance of its value. Therefore, one of education system’s goals is to bring reading un-motivated students closer to reading and to stimulate their internal motivation. School work is more girl-friendly, because comparing with boys, girls enjoy reading, writing and studying more. Here we see a problem of missing male teachers in our school system. Male teachers would show a great example for boys to enjoy reading and school work and with that possibly improve boys’ motivation. The main goal of this research was improving the level of reading motivation of two Primary school boys that are attending 4th and 5th grade. We used qualitative research. We started off by collecting the data about their reading motivation. We used Reading Motivation Questionnaire for Young Students and compared their results with national results. Both boys got low results and we prepared an action plan to improve the motivation. We had meetings for three months and after that we used the same questionnaire in order to compare the before and after results. Results are promising and show us that if we tried for a longer period of time, boys’ reading motivation would improve even more. Sadly, the sample is too small to generalize it on all the students with the same situation, but the results can give some insight on how to start and what might help in improving boys’ reading motivation. We concluded this thesis with some recommendations for male (and female) teachers on how to improve the reading of un-motivated students. Recommendations were formulated with the help of the reviewed literature and the obtained research results.
