Sekundarni povzetek: We use to say that children are our greatest treasure and that we should protect them against any possible threat. Diseases are definitely one of these threats that parents would like to protect their child from. However, we often do not know which are serious infections and where they come from. In many cases, cats and dogs are children's best friends and they treat them in the same way, or even kinder as they treat humans. Kids are of course not aware that pets can cause serious diseases. This is the role of us, adults, to teach children about how to act and behave when in the company of animals. In the theoretical part of my thesis I introduce parasitic diseases in cats and dogs which are transmittable to humans, especially focusing on the infection with the dog tapeworm (Echinococcus) as the infection of humans with its cysts is deadly. Further on, I discuss the measures to prevent the infection with the dog tapeworm at home, in kindergartens and schools. The two most important measures are maintaining proper hygiene while in contact with pets and proper handling of pig or sheep entrails at slaughter. In the empirical part, I present the results of my research based on a questionnaire and an interview with a veterinary and pediatrician. The aims of my investigation were to establish whether there is a potential danger of infection with the dog tapeworm in the Golnik, Trstenik and Bohinjska Bistrica area, are the parents in the regions aware of possible infections with the dog tapeworm, what the parents' opinions about their children's protection against the infection in kindergartens, and how many children come into contact with cats and dogs. As much as two thirds of the interviewed parents believe that kindergartens do not provide sufficient information on the diseases transmittable from cats and dogs to children. Kindergartens should thus provide to parents and children educational brochures and posters as well as oral information about the ways of transmission and preventing the infection with the dog tapeworm.
