magistrsko delo
Čeprav kakovost spanja ni napovednik uporabe posameznih strategij čustvene regulacije, igra pomembno vlogo pri učinkovitosti strategij zatiranja izražanja čustev in ruminacije.

The relationship between sleep quality and quantity and effectiveness of emotion regulation in everyday life |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
The following master's thesis investigates the reciprocal relationship between the quality and quantity of sleep and positive and negative affect. Furthermore, the thesis explores he predictive value of the sleep quality and duration on the use of individual emotion regulation strategies and their effectiveness in regulating positive and negative affect. The study is based on the experience sampling method, over the course of seven days. The study included 157 young adults who were asked to answer questions about their emotional state and the strategies they used to regulate their emotions. The participants answered these questions six times a day. They were also required to answer questions about sleep duration and quality; however, this took part only once a day. Using multilevel modelling we have found that both sleep quality and duration positively predict positive affect the next day and negatively predict negative affect the next day. The relationship between sleep duration and negative affect turned out to be more complex, as after incorporating emotional regulation strategies, sleep duration no longer significantly predicts negative affect. The analysis does not confirm a relationship in the affect-to-sleep direction, as neither positive nor negative affect predicts sleep quality and duration. Although sleep quality is not a significant predictor of the use of emotion regulation strategies, it still plays an important role in the effectiveness of the use of expressive suppression and rumination. Participants who reported a higher sleep quality are more effective in the use of expressive suppression for negative affect. These participants report a lower decrease in positive and a lower increase in negative affect compared to individuals who report lower sleep quality. Sleep duration, on the other hand, is a negative predictor of the use of acceptance and reappraisal for both positive and negative affect. The present thesis shows that the effectiveness of emotion regulation strategies does not vary throughout the day. The discussion of the results, the limitations and advantages of the study and proposed suggestions for further research are listed in the thesis discussion. |
