History of the police in the United Kingdom |

In the thesis, we presented the beginnings of the London Metropolitan Police and the reasons for its establishment. We defined the main tasks and challenges of the police of that time and the influence its establishment had on other police organizations across Europe and America. We conducted a comparison between American and British police as well as their internal culture. We also defined the types of police models, introduced the beginnings of women's inclusion in the police force, examined the current operation of the Metropolitan Police, and finally explained the main mistakes in the investigation of Stephen Lawrence and reviewed the standards of behavior and internal culture within the Metropolitan Police.
It was found that the establishment of the London Metropolitan Police had a significant impact on the formation of other police organizations, with many emulating it. However, due to historical background, the police in our country initially had a somewhat different purpose than in the United Kingdom. Likewise, significant differences in the operation of American and British police were observed, although they are quite similar considering numerous incidents within the police forces.
Both reports presented at the end of the thesis showed that the state of the British police is currently far from ideal and that the internal culture deviates from the idealistic ideas set forth by Robert Peel at the time. Despite the efforts of many to normalize the situation, much work lies ahead if they wish to regain the trust of every Briton and become a police force that other organizations can once again look up to. |
