Peer mediation, as an efficient way of confict resolution in primary school, is presented in this diploma paper. The theoretical part exposes the question of education, educational plan, mediation in general, peer mediation and serves as a ground to the empirical research. The purpose of this diploma paper is, first with with theoretical examination of the chosen subject and later with independent research, to determine the frequency of referencing of peer mediation as a proactive and preventive activity in educational plans of primary schools and to find out the actual use of this technique in practice, to explore the reasons why the schools actually decide for peer mediation as well as motives for pupils to become peer mediators and to discover how the education of peer mediators occurs in practice. In continuation the research of positive effects of peer meditation takes place, which are detected by school teachers and what obstacles occur at introduction or execution of peer meditation. The descriptive method of empirical pedagogical research is being used. The data, acquired with various techniques – method of the complete observation with participation, qualitative document analysis and analysis questionnaries for coordinators of peer mediation, peer mediators and other teachers – are chosen on dedicated sample of primary school population in Ljubljana, who deal with peer mediation for 2 years or more. Data analyses shows that the coordinators of peer mediation and other teachers, as well as peer mediators, see the advantages in use of peer mediation, which target especially on learning of alternative ways of conflict resolution and changed consideration of all people involved regarding relations among people. The coordinators of peer mediation emphasize the fact that with learning the techniques of peer mediation, the pupils learn a lot for their future life and start to realize, at the same time, that they are solely responsible for resolution of their own conflicts. Interviewed teachers, on the other hand, see the benefits of peer mediation in the fact, that conflict resolution with peer mediation is less stressful and more successful for quarreled parties, because pupils are generationally close to one another, besides that, they agree that the vandalism in school is reducing, pupils elaborate critical way of thinking and new skills of conflict resolution. Most of the teachers also agree that the use of peer mediation in school brings more time to teachers, which they can dedicate to their primary role, teaching. The interpretation of all acquired data complexly shows the experiences with peer mediation on chosen schools from different points of view. |
