Sekundarni jezik: Angleški jezik
Sekundarni naslov: Contest and student's interest in computer science
Sekundarni povzetek: The massive use of information and communication technologies (ICT) allows children to try it at a very early age, first by using it for playing and then also for information searches and for educational purposes. For this reason they are more receptive and have it easier to follow innovations and the development of technologies. Computer Science is an elective subject which students can choose to attend only in the last triad of elementary school. In the diploma paper we present the Slovenian curriculum for Computer Science and compare it with the computer curriculum prepared by the largest computer association in the world – ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and which includes instructions for teaching Computer Science from Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K12). Since students are faced with Computer Science in their last years of primary school, competitions play an important role in motivating students for learning Computer Science. Therefore, we will introduce the competition on informatics and computer literacy Beaver, in which the number of participants is growing rapidly. The competition takes place in primary and secondary schools of 21 European countries, Japan, Canada, South Korea and Israel, and it is still expanding which proves the great interest of students and teachers. The organizers of the competition have primarily focused on developing entertaining and educational tasks that are the heart of each competition. Tasks do not test the knowledge of specific software, but are focused on basic concepts of computer science and informatics. Therefore, we made an analysis of tasks in the Beaver competition and have determined which goals are tested in individual competitions and categories. We have additionally included a survey questionnaire for students and mentors who participated in the national Beaver competition in 2011. We will check how much students are interested in computer science and if they participate in different computer activities, courses and competitions. We are also interested in the opinions of students and mentors about the Beaver task, the implementation of the Beaver competition and further cooperation.
