The diploma thesis is divided into the theoretical, pedagogical and the practical part. In the theoretical part I established the definition of the term illustration, focusing on the historical meaning together with it's purpose and how they developed through time. Furthermore I defined the differences between contemporary and book illustration and the way they are percieved and valued in the light of contemporary art practices. I presented the problem of it being too illustrative, and how it's ability to clearly depict an idea is percieved as predictable and less complex. I explored the prejudice of illustration as a female art form and commented on how that impacts the artist herself, along with the viewers. I found multiple possible reasons and explanations, one it being a product of thinking that any type of work dealing with children is inherently a woman's job. Illustration, especially the kind dealing with fiction and fairytales, therefore by assocation fell into the same category. Fairytale illustrations nontheless succeeded in opening the gates to exploring other forms and approaches within this subject, leaving the contemporary illustration free to explore many different formats. I established how the rise of digital arts, the world wide web and the digitalization of the image changed the way we define and understand art, which consequently allowed illustration to breach out even further into animation, (product) design, street art and interactive games. In the pedagogical part I introduced the didactic use of illustration with it's ability to visualize text, enhancing the child's imagination and understanding of art while also developing their cognitive skills (using it's visual approach illustration is able to place unconscious hardships into consciousness, where the child can resolve these issues in a healthy manner). In the practical part I analyzed a set of my own illustrations, using the themes I explored within the thesis, along with my thoughts and feelings, to understand why and how I express myself. I explored what illustration means to me, how my gender applies to the themes and subjects, how I define myself as an artist and place myself within the digital and contemporary media. |

Diplomsko delo sestavljajo teoretični, pedagoški in praktični del. |
