Sekundarni naslov: Dual diagnosis
Sekundarni povzetek: Dual diagnosis denotes intertwining of intellectual disabilities with mental disorders. With the help of systematic examination of literature, intellectual disabilities are determined (they are characterized by subaverage intellectual activity and difficulties in adaptive skills), along side mental disorders. Their influence is seen in changes of thinking, perception, emotionality, behaviour and cognition. Mental disorders often occur with people with intellectual disabilities (data differs from 10 to 39 %) and the forms of mental disorders, together with approaches of help and intervention, represent the main part of the thesis. Mood, behavioural and anxiety disorders, psychoses and dementia are only some of the frequenter comorbid psychiatric disorders with people with intellectual disabilities. Manifestation of mental disorders differentiates in individuals, which led to the development of diversified ways of treatment on different areas. The one that prevails is the medical approach with psychopharmacological therapy, because about 48 % of people with dual diagnosis are getting antipsychotic medication. Other established approaches of help include rehabilitation and behavioural therapy, psychotherapy and training of social skills. Art and musical therapy, hippotherapy, therapeutic farm and physical/sports activities can support them. In spite of this, there is a lack of a multidisciplinary approach of treatment by professionals that engage the population of people with dual diagnosis. Special educational field is pushed to the background, even though the educators often play the central role in recognising the sings of mental disorders in students with intellectual disabilities. Possibilities for developing special educational programs of help for the population of people with dual diagnosis are not researched, due to the lack of information from this field.

Duševne motnje so pri osebah z motnjami v duševnem razvoju pogosto prisotne (podatki variirajo od 10 do 39 %) in pojavne oblike duševnih motenj predstavljajo osrednji del diplomske naloge, skupaj s pristopi pomoči in intervencije. Razpoloženjske, vedenjske, anksiozne motnje, psihoze in demenca so le ene izmed pogostejših komorbidnih psihiatričnih motenj pri osebah z motnjami v duševnem razvoju.
